In the sports world, no story is more engaging than the one behind the world cup of soccer. This trophy of victory has been around for just about a hundred years and it has an interesting past. The World Cup of soccer has lasted through generations of soccer fans and will continue to be a symbol of the utmost challenge and triumph in sports for years to come. Here is a hardly any of the history behind the world cup of football and how it got its diverse names.
beginning in 1930, the world cup of football was known as the 'Jules Rimet Trophy' named after the man who was the first president of the Federation Internationale de soccer association ( FIFA ). It was a beautiful one of a kind prize designed by the French Sculptor, Abel Lafleur, who gave it a gold finish on a lapis lazuli ( blue natural stone ) base. The design included an illustration of the ancient Greek goddess of victory 'Nike', thus it was originally called 'Victory'. Over time, the trophy was etched with the names of the 9 winners of the world Cup championship soccer games. In 1946, the prize was re-named the 'Jules Rimet Trophy', but it has also been labeled the 'Coupe du Monde' or World Cup.
But that isn't where the story of the planet Cup ends. During World War II, for fear of it being taken by German nazi troops that had occupied the region where it was stored, the then Italian-born president of FIFA, Dr. Barassi, hid'Victory' under his bed in a shoebox for several years. Despite his courageous attempts to preserve the trophy, in 1966, the trophy vanished while on display in England in a public display at Westminster Central Hall. It was discovered seven days later, buried under a tree in an urban garden in South Norwood, a good distance away, dug up by a cute dog named 'Pickles'. Even today, no one knows the motive it was thieved or the identity of the guilty party behind the heist.
In 1970, the trophy was won a 3rd time by Brazil's football team and was housed in the nation's capital, Rio De Janeiro. However , once again it was subjected to a burglary in 1973 when it went missing and wasn't again to be seen by any one, even amonst soccer fans. Stories have it , the trophy was softened down for its valuable metals. However , we'll never know definitely how Victory met her badly timed loss from the world of sports.
That is not the end of the world Cup's travels to the hallowed halls of football celebrity. In 1974, a new World Cup prize was made to replace the former and was presented to the captain of the victorious West Germany team, Franz Beckenbauer. The design of the newer trophy was selected from over fifty designs that were submitted to the FIFA by gurus from the seven continents. The winning design is a solid eighteen carat gold swirling statue with a double-row malachite base. It was designed by Italian designer, Silvio Gazzaniga, who went on to design several famous sports world trophies for soccer and baseball.
Today, the World Cup is called simply as the FIFA World Cup prize, but soccer fans sometimes still reference it as'Victory' in respect of the previous trophy. Only 5 countries have won it so far, the latest being Italy, but there are enough spaces for the winning teams names to be added onto its base till the year 2038.
